Apollo or mountain Apollo (Parnassius apollo), is a butterfly of the family Papilionidae (Swallowtail) a typically mountain species that prefers hills and flowery alpine meadows and pastures of the continental European mountains, in Spain, Scandinavia and Central Europe, in the Balkans up to northern Greece and in the Alps between Italy and France. There are numerous distinct local races and these have attracted the attentions of ruthless collectors over the years. This species is protected everywhere throughout Europe and is an endangered species. Mt Terminillo, Lazio, Itakly July 2020
